A Mutare man, in the habit of duping people through generating fake EcoCash confirmation messages, has been spared jail after the court ordered him to restitute all his victims.
Aleck Kadungure (21) was initially slapped with a seven-month jail term before Mutare magistrate Ms Prisca Manhibi suspended three months on condition that he does not commit a similar offence within the next five years. The remaining four months were suspended on condition that he restitutes his victims.
Prosecutor Mr Nyasha Mukonyore proved that on May 15 this year, Kadungure approached Tendai Kapfumvuti of Dangamvura and requested $15 for transport.
He then generated a fake EcoCash transfer confirmation for $15 and was given the money. Kapfumvuti later discovered that Kadungure had not sent the money moments after he had left.
A few hours later, Kadungure duped Pamela Munotsva, who resides in Hobhouse, using the same modus operandi after he went to her stall on the pretext of buying some second-hand clothes.
He then went away with clothes worth $180 after indicating that he had paid via EcoCash.
