Concern over low circumcision uptake

STAKEHOLDERS in Manicaland have expressed concern over the low uptake and acceptance of voluntary male medical circumcision due to prevailing social and cultural influences.

Speaking at a provincial Aids Action committee meeting held in Mutare, National Aids Council provincial manager Mr Evos Makoni said acceptance and uptake of voluntary male medical circumcision remains low in spite of programmes that have been set in motion to encourage the procedure as a tool to combat HIV/Aids prevalence.

“Acceptance and uptake of voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) remains poor in the province.

“This is because as a province we are not really a circumcising population due to socio-cultural influences,” he said.

“The drive towards increasing VMMC acceptance and uptake is being derailed as there are still misconceptions, stereotypes and half truths that are still associated with VMMC.” — Herald Reporter.
