Concern over surge in crime in Mash Central

Mash Central Bureau
Officer Commanding Police in Mashonaland Central, Commissioner Rangarirai Mushaurwa, has expressed concern over the increase in crime in the province despite measures being implemented by the force to fight the scourge. She said during the first quarter of this year, 2 196 crimes were recorded against a total of 2 030 cases recorded during the same period last year, indicating an 8 percent increase.

Speaking during the ZRP provincial re-launch of the Client Service Charter at Nzvimbo Growth Point in Mazowe District last week, Comm Mushaurwa said police was aware that effective policing has to be in tandem with and facilitate the attainment of Vision 2030 and create an environment for the country to realise accelerated economic growth.

“Crime is generally on the increase in the province despite the various measures we are implementing in order to eradicate it. For instance, during the first quarter of the year 2019, a total of 2 196 crimes were recorded against a total of 2 030 recorded during the same period last year.

“This implies that crime rose by 166 cases, which represents an increase of 8 percent. We are aware that effective policing in the Second Republic has to be in tandem with the facilitation of the attainment of Vision 2030, which is to become an upper middle income country by the year 2030.

“As police service in the country, we are, therefore, cognisant of the need to ensure that our policing approach helps to create an enabling environment for the country to realise accelerated economic development.”
She said in view of the rise in the crime rate in the province, it was vital for everyone to use the re-launch of the Client Service Charter to form a stronger alliance against crime, adding that as the country moves towards devolution, a crime-free environment will undoubtedly be an important ingredient for the province to realise its full potential.
