ZIM Hip hop artist, Thabee, reckons “beefing” is what keeps the genre interesting and evolving.
He believes throwing “disses’ at each other has made the genre popular with fans.
“Disagreements and rivalries between artists add depth and energy to the music so we might pretend you all want peace but trust me, when I say we need a little bit of conflict, it keeps things interesting in hip hop.
“When two artists are going at it, it honestly creates this kind of energy that we can’t replicate any other way,” he said.
Thabees acknowledged that there is a fine line between healthy competition and unnecessary negativity.
“I am not saying we should all start attacking each other or anything like that but I do think that having different perspectives and opinions in hip hop is what makes it so unique and dynamic.
“Believe it or not, writing a ‘diss’ track about someone takes a lot of creativity and it’s a win when the track generates a buzz,” he added.
The biggest feud in hip hop history was the explosive ‘90s rivarly between the East Coast and West Coast of the United States.
The East Coast crew was led by the Notorious B.I.G while the West Coast was led by Tupac Shakur.
It brought Bad Boy Records of New York and Death Row music of Los Angeles into direct conflict.
Tragically, it also led to the deaths of the Notorious B.I.G and Tupac who were both shot dead.
