Constitutional amendment is pro-development, Progressive Women for ED say

THE topical constitutional amendment is a vital step towards sustaining national development, unity and efficient governance.

These were the sentiments shared by Progressive Women for ED, a women’s advocacy group committed to complementing Government efforts by promoting civic engagement and empowering women economically.

In an interview, the group’s coordinator, Cde Laytone Marisa, said the amendment is a “civic necessity” that will enhance policy continuity and strengthen governance structures, enabling the country to implement development programmes without disruption.

“The amendment will allow Government to continue implementing long-term programmes aimed at transforming the economy and improving people’s livelihoods,” he said.

The proposed constitutional amendment seeks to extend the tenure of both the President and Parliament from five to seven years, a move that would push the next harmonised elections from 2028 to 2030 to allow development programmes to be fully implemented.

Cde Marisa said such policy continuity is essential for the successful implementation of national development initiatives and infrastructure projects.

“Major development programmes require stability and time to mature. When leadership and policy direction remain consistent, Government can deliver tangible results for the people,” he said.

He added that the amendment will also promote unity and ensure that national resources are directed towards development instead of political contestation.

Progressive Women for ED is also focusing on empowering women economically so they can contribute meaningfully to national development.

“Our organisation is mobilising women to take advantage of economic opportunities and participate actively in nation building, in line with the ruling party’s vision of inclusive development,” said Cde Marisa.

Supporters at the Green Valley meeting praised the group’s initiatives, noting that women’s participation strengthens grassroots engagement and reinforces national development priorities.

Cde Marisa also highlighted the importance of avoiding divisive election cycles that can delay progress.

He encouraged citizens to prioritise national development over political contestation.

“Let us focus on building a Zimbabwe where everyone is accommodated and where development benefits are felt in every home and community,” he said.

With grassroots engagement and strong citizen participation, Progressive Women for ED said Zimbabwe is on track to achieve a stable, development-oriented future, guided by unity, policy continuity and inclusive growth.
