Construction of Borrowdale mall to start next year

Augur Investments chairman Mr Ken Sharpe says construction of the US$100 million Mall of Zimbabwe in the up market suburb of Borrowdale in Harare will commence next year as all relevant licenses and logistics are now in place. In an interview, Mr Sharpe said the group had obtained the various clearances and primary construction of roads was currently underway.

“Premise fencing has been done to completion while servicing of roads is in progress, thus construction of the Mall will commence early next year,” he said.

The property received the green light from the Environmental Management Agency last year in October and it is believed over 75 percent of space has been taken by tenants, some of which include South African retailer, Mr Price. The Zimbabwe Mall is expected to be the second largest in Africa, and would create thousands of jobs for the country. All things being equal, Mr Sharpe said the mall should be completed by April 2015 after 18 to 24 months of construction.

The 68 000 square metre-mall will encompass office parks, cluster homes, a school and medical facilities with overall turnover estimated at 8 percent of the country’s gross domestic product. In addition to the mall, Augur Investments’ West Property is developing two residential projects in Gunhill and at Pekugara Borrowdale Estate which is in the vicinity of the Millennium Park — FinX
