The price for the food basket increased by 5,6 percent from US$145,72 to US$153,09. However, the cost of soaps and detergents decreased by 2,07 percent from US$13,53 in August to US$13,25, said CCZ.
The council noted that in the month of September, prices of some items in the food basket have increased or slightly decreased, while most have maintained their prices.
It was also noted that the price of mealie-meal went up by an average of US88c from US$9,10 to US$9,98 while flour prices went up by US10c from US$1,85 to US$1,95.
“Decreases were recorded for white sugar which decreased by 5c from US$2,15 to US$2,10 and bath soaps and washing powder both decreased by 4c from US79c to US75c and US$1,39 to US$1,35 respectively.”
The prices of most basic commodities, among them bread, tea leaves, cooking oil and salt did not change from the July 2012 figures.
“The CCZ continues to encourage consumers to shop conscientiously and to always take comfort in buying certified products and provided with vital information such as manufacturing and expiry dates.”
The cost of the CCZ basket for transport, rent, water and electricity, health, education, clothing and footwear is at US$399.
