Controversy mars MDC-T Chinhoyi primary elections

Garadhi (MDC-T) was trounced by former mayor and medical doctor Peter Mataruse over the weekend has led to infighting.

Dr Mataruse is accused of employing dirty tactics including massive corruption and bringing in people from as far as Hurungwe to vote in the primaries. Dr Mataruse garnered 545 votes against Mr Garadhi’s 220 while outsider Edeline Huchu got 23 votes.

There were, however, claims of corruption as at least 45 people were denied the chance to participate amid allegations that they had been brought from Magunje Growth Point.
“There was a lot of imposition of candidates and bringing in of people from as far as Magunje, to take part in the voting process,” said a source who preferred anonymity.

“Fortunately, they were discovered before they could vote. The incident has caused disgruntlement among the people in Chinhoyi and we risk losing this seat.”

Some people who had successfully tendered their CVs for consideration for the constituency could not find their names on the nomination list.

This, the sources said, was due to manipulation of the system to elbow out those perceived to belong to an opposing faction.
