Chemhanza taking it easy ahead of title defenceCOPA Coca-Cola boys Under-16 defending champions Chemhanza High are taking a cautious approach ahead of the national finals of the schools flagship football tournament set for tomorrow in the capital.
Some of the best teenage footballers in this country converge at Gwanzura and Zimbabwe Grounds, two football grounds that have honed some of greatest players to grace our football fields, for this year’s edition of the Copa Coca-Cola finals. The organisers said they wanted to invite some of the country’s soccer legends to grace the occasion.
The showcase, which is being hosted by Harare province, will be staged at various venues, including the Zimbabwe Grounds, Takashinga Cricket Academy, Highfield High School, Kuwangira and Chengu schools in Highfield on Saturday and Sunday. Harare province will also host the national finals of the girls Under-17 football.
Harare will have four representatives — Churchill, Oriel Boys High, Roosevelt and Vainona. Churchill and Roosevelt qualified by virtue of being hosts while Oriel and Vainona had to go through the provincial qualifiers. – CL ReporterTeen cricketer excels in BenoniZIMBABWE Under-13 right-handed batsman Wesley Madhevere stole the show at the just-ended Eastern Junior Cricket Club Association Festival in Benoni, South Africa. The 12-year-old was impressive with a performance that saw him being named batsman of the tournament in his age group after scoring three half centuries.
Madhevere, who is a product of St Aiden’s Primary School in Chitungwiza, is being tipped to develop into an accomplished batsman in the future. Singo travelled with the team on their recent trip. However, the teenage batsman almost missed the tour because he had no travel documents. ZC then helped him obtain a passport just a week before the team left. Zimbabwe took the Under-13, Under-15 and Under-17 teams to the tournament which was hosted at the Sahara Park Willowmoore Cricket Grounds in Benoni.The tournament also featured teams from Botswana, Kenya, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland and Zambia. – CL Reporter
