A policeman based at Rusape Police Station fatally shot himself yesterday morning after he was found being intimate with a junior officer’s wife.
The Sergeant Major, whose name could not be released yesterday, reportedly shot himself once in the head with his service gun, an AK47 assault rifle. He died on the spot and his body was taken to Rusape Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.
His body was discovered on a chair with the riffle still on his arms, while blood was oozing from the bullet wound. He was wearing civilian clothes.
A police source who spoke on condition of anonymity said: “He was a Sergeant Major based at Rusape Police Station. The details so far are that he was found being intimate with a junior officer’s wife who is also based at the police station. He then took the AK rifle and went to a secluded area where he shot himself once.”
Police in Rusape were yesterday still investigating the matter. Statistics show that more men are committing suicide than their female counterparts.
In 2016, 489 men committed suicide countrywide compared to 147 women, while 348 men committed suicide in 2015, compared to 126 women. Observers say the high numbers of men committing suicide show that men are failing to handle social pressures.
Last month, a married ex-police officer residing at Ross Camp in Bulawayo allegedly committed suicide in Beitbridge after finding his girlfriend in bed with another man.
Walter Musakaruka allegedly drank poison. Two other police officers based at Nkayi Police Station, allegedly committed suicide by drinking pesticides during the same month this year.
Constables Aubrey Mahefa (25) and Liston Hove allegedly killed themselves following domestic disputes.
