adminTwo constables, Slindeni Mathew and Byron Kahove, whose ages were not given, appeared separately with Mathew pleading guilty to the offence while his co-accused, Kahove denied the charge.
Mathew was sentenced to 320 hours of community service which he will perform at Muchakata Primary School in Gokwe.
Kahove, who is denying the charges and is out of custody on $20, was remanded to 28 February.
The State’s case against the two is that on 23 December last year, Mathew and Kahove arrived at an accident scene at the 117km peg along the Kwekwe-Gokwe Road.
Mathew, it is alleged, discovered that a Toyota Noah that was heading towards Gokwe had just overturned and killed one passenger, Job Mautsi, on the spot.
Seven other passengers in the car, which was being driven by Liberty Sibanda, were seriously injured.
The court heard that Mathew and his colleague searched the deceased and found that he had $3 250 cash in his pockets.
Mathew and Slindeni shared $3 000 equally between themselves and surrendered only $250 to Gokwe Traffic Officer in Charge, an Inspector Jumbe, who had arrived at the accident scene.
The court heard that one of the deceased’s relatives, Mr Jaya Mautsi, later visited Gokwe Police Station where he reported that Job Mautsi had $3 250 cash with him when he was involved in the fatal accident.
