POLICE sexual abuse awareness campaigns in schools have led to the arrest and conviction of a sexual predator who raped his nine-year-old niece and sodomised his seven-year-old nephew. Cliaf Nkomo, 22, of Sizinda suburb was now based in South Africa where he worked as a gardener and his sisters lured him into coming back home by promising to pay damages for his fiancé with whom he has a three-month-old baby.
The family had discovered he had molested his niece.
His woes mounted following his nephew’s revelation that Nkomo abused him when he was three-years-old.
The clever juvenile, who cannot be named for legal reasons, reported the abuse to his mother following sexual abuse campaigns conducted by the police at his school.
The boy, who is now in Grade One, is aged seven.
Nkomo pleaded guilty to a charge of aggravated indecent assault for sodomising the boy when he appeared before regional magistrate Abednico Ndebele on Friday.
Ndebele sentenced him to 15 years in prison.
He suspended three years on condition that Nkomo does not commit a similar offence in the next five years.
Prosecuting, Paidamoyo Zengeni told the court that on an unknown date but in 2011, Nkomo indecently assaulted his nephew.
The two were sharing a bed.
“The accused woke up at night and switched on the lights. He went to the bed and sodomised his nephew,” said Zengeni.
The court heard that the boy tried to move away but Nkomo held on until the boy fell off the bed.
The offence came to light after the boy took heed of police advice to report any incidents of a sexual nature.
Magistrate Ndebele, in passing sentence, turned down the prosecutor’s application for Nkomo to serve his sentence concurrently with the 15 years he is serving for raping his niece.
“The court has taken into consideration that you are a first time offender and pleaded guilty but the plea is not an expression of remorse but a matter of course.
“You’re still young, at only 22 but you’re a sexual predator who preys on young kids and only a prison term is appropriate,” said Ndebele.
He said Nkomo deserved to be sentenced for the offence as it was of a different nature.
