in police custody.
Renfias Chiputu (26), who was stationed at Borrowdale Police Station, appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Morgen Nemadire and was remanded in custody to March 30. He was advised to apply for bail at the High Court due to the gravity of the charge.
Prosecutor Mr Michael Reza alleges that on March 10, Chiputu arrested the 27 year-old woman at her residence as a suspect in a stolen cellphone case.
He allegedly took her and her two children – one of whom is breastfeeding – to Borrowdale Police Station but did not lock them in the cells. He allegedly gave her a blanket and said he would return later on. Around midnight, Chiputu allegedly sneaked into the charge office through a window and told the woman that he wanted to have sex with her and if she acceded to his request he would release her the following day.
The next day Chiputu recorded her statement. He relea-sed her and told her to return on March 14 during which time she filed charges against him. – CR.
