A POLICE officer, who was investigating a fraud case, has been arrested for FRAUD.

George Mudyandarira, 40, the police officer, was not asked to plead when he appeared before Harare magistrate Ruth Moyo, who released him on US$100 bail.

He was ordered not to interfere with witnesses and to reside at his given address until the matter is finalised.

The complainant is Magaret Zizhou.

The court heard that in March last year, Zizhou reported a fraud case at ZRP Harare Central against Samantha Chiedza Gumbo.

The matter was referred to the CID Commercial Crimes Division in Harare for investigations and Mudyandarira was allocated the case.

In April, Zizhou’s daughter, Wendy Kupakwashe Zizhou, made a follow-up on the case.

Wendy was told Mudyandarira did not have resources to travel to Zvishavane to arrest Gumbo.

He further indicated that the journey would cost US$200.

Wendy requested to send the money through Ecocash but Mudyandarira insisted that the money should be handed in cash only.

Zizhou sent the money to her friend, via World Remit, and he handed over the money to Mudyandarira in the Harare CBD.

On April 30, Mudyandarira advised Zizhou that he had arrested Gumbo in Zvishavane.

After Gumbo was arrested, the resolution of the case was hampered by some missing documents.

Zizhou felt that she was unfairly made to pay US$200 by Mudyandarira and filed a report, leading to his arrest.
