TWO men who brutally killed a police officer have been sentenced to life imprisonment.
The High Court sitting in Mutare jailed Sanele Simbarashe Makondo (23) of Hatcliffe Extension in Harare and Sterio Joao Mahachi (55) of Machipanda in Mozambique after convicting them of the murder of police officer Travor Mundida.
The attack occurred on 10 September 2024 along the Mutare to Harare railway line opposite Yeovil Location.
The court heard that the two men, together with an accomplice who is still on the run, viciously attacked the officer and stabbed him repeatedly using unknown weapons.
After killing him, the suspects robbed him of his wallet, Samsung cellphone and shoes before fleeing the scene. The stolen cellphone was sold in Mozambique.
Mundida’s body was later found lying face down, bearing six stab wounds to the back, rib cage, buttock and hip.
The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) said violent crimes, especially those targeting law enforcement officers, will be met with the full weight of the law as authorities intensify the fight against serious crime.
