A POLICE officer based in Beitbridge has been charged with attempted murder following his brutal attack on a till operator at a local butchery on Monday evening during a disagreement over change.

Ziggie Khonzani (32), who is deployed to the border town, was remanded in custody to Friday for trial when he briefly appeared before regional magistrate Ms Charity Maphosa.

Appearing for the State, Ms Tsitsi Mtukuwa said on May 5, the police officer went to a local butchery in Beitbridge town around 9 pm.

He then bought meat using a US$20 note, and he was told there was no change. The court heard that the accused became angry and violent and he picked an empty beer bottle and hit the till operator on the left side of the head, causing near-fatal wounds.

He was restrained from further attacking the till operator by another man who was in the butchery.

The matter was reported to the police, who arrested him.
