A POLICE officer has been arraigned on allegations of selling more than 30 sets of police uniforms, an act deemed unlawful and a breach of his duties as a public servant.
Muteswa Shamain Dzingai, employed by the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage as a police officer, appeared before Harare regional magistrate Mrs Marehwanazvo Gofa yesterday.
He is facing charges of criminal abuse of office as a public officer.
Dzingai was remanded on bail of US$200 to November 25, pending the finalisation of investigations.
The complainant in the case is the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, represented by Mr Christopher Lloyd Tarenyika.
Prosecutor Mr Rufaro Chonzi alleged that in early September 2025, Justice Chasiya, another police officer stationed at the Police Band, approached Dzingai seeking assistance in acquiring police uniforms.
Chasiya allegedly requested 40 riot trousers, 50 Special Tactics Unit (STU) caps, and 20 grey shirts.
Dzingai reportedly supplied the uniforms and received US$1 000 in payment.
Chasiya then resold the police uniforms to other officers.
The sale of police uniforms is strictly prohibited as these items are considered state-issued property and are not for commercial purposes.
Such conduct, the prosecution argued, is inconsistent with Dzingai’s duties as a law enforcement officer.
The alleged crime came to light on October 23, when Chasiya was arrested in connection with the illegal sale of police uniforms.
