POLICE in Mashonaland East have this week joined their counterparts across the nation and the entire world in commemorating the International Day on Police Cooperation.
To commemorate the day, police in Mashonaland East province went into Marondera central business district on Thursday this week, where they interacted with the public;
They also conducted an operation targeting mushikashika vehicles, and other illegal activities.
The police also conducted crime awareness campaigns across the town of Marondera.
Officer Commanding Police Mashonaland East Province Commissioner Grace Ndou said they decided to educate the public on how they work and to urge them to abide by the law at all times.
“In Mashonaland East province, The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) in commemorating the International Day of Police Cooperation decided to take the opportunity to market the work being done by the police especially in Mashonaland East, more-so the role played by women. As we know that most people feel safe when they see women policing.
“The majority of the populace in Mashonaland East is made up of women and our going out in our numbers to make sure that the environment where women are doing their businesses, where women are interacting is safe was of paramount importance today.
“So we went out in our numbers in Marondera town and we were hammering on people doing illegal activities such as illegal pirate taxis because a lot of women are also harassed when they go to these vehicles by touts. We also noted that a lot of pavements are being bocked by people doing businesses and we decided to make the environment safe,” she said.
Comm Ndou said as a result of their visit in town, the police managed to make 19 arrests for various criminal activities.
“Some would be fined while some were referred to court. While our programme was going on, we also took note that women are victims of domestic violence cases that include rape. So our going out today makes the public now to know that there are women policing their area and they can feel free to make reports without any fear of being ridiculed on their reports.
“We also took the opportunity to market the organisation. We want more women to join the police so that we can assist each other in policing and maintaining our communities,” she said.
Meanwhile, Comm Ndou bemoaned a recent incident where a woman from Marondera assaulted her boyfriend with a broken glass, where she had to cut the man of his manhood.
“On a sad note we received a report where a young woman is being charged with attempted murder emanating from a case of domestic violence. She had a misunderstanding with her boyfriend and this resulted in her taking drastic action where she allegedly took a broken glass and reportedly cut the manhood of the boyfriend.
“Now for us we then note as women officers that we are now challenged, we now have to take this and educate women on how to react on issues where they are provoked without taking drastic action. We are going to educate them on what the law provides in terms of their safety. We want to educate them on what the police has on offer.”
