THE Pan-African Business Network will next month host the second annual corporate governance summit in the resort town of Victoria Falls whose aim is to encourage accountability and transparency in organisations while improving collaboration between stakeholders.
The summit, slated for November 27 to 29, will run under the theme, “Demystifying governance challenges for sustainable business in Africa”.
PABN says over the years, corporate governance has evolved from just focusing on improving an organisation’s internal processes and procedures which are crucial for them to encompassing other issues that address their operational environment and institutional development of their countries.
These factors also add towards attracting investment, improving the organisation’s competitiveness and managing risk. In a statement, PABN said the summit seeks to secure the strengthening of policy to support sustainability while also stimulating technology-driven solutions to issues and inspiring effective evaluation programmes.
“We will discuss concepts and experiences of good governance practices in development, transition and conflict mitigation while we will also assess and build on past experiences as a means to institutionalise good governance practices.
“The approach will be holistic as challenges and constraints at national and regional levels that hinder the achievements of good governance will also be highlighted,” read the statement.
The banking crisis of the last decade is expected to be topical at the summit as last year there were some media reports that linked the closure of some distressed financial institutions to poor corporate governance frameworks.
Collaboration
Subsequently, future pragmatic interventions to enhance good corporate governance practices in the country will be articulated together with national and regional policies that would facilitate collaboration among international, public and civic entities to support the discipline.
The summit will take place at a time the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators of Zimbabwe has launched the inaugural excellence in corporate governance awards that seek to recognise individuals and organisations for excellence in corporate governance issues.
Speakers expected at the summit include former Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce president who is the president of the association of Sadc Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Mr Oswell Binha; ICSAZ president Mr Glovah Madzima and founder and head of mission of the African Union Diaspora Africa Forum, Ambassador Dr Erieka Bennett among many other corporate governance experts.
