ZIMBABWE Women’s Super League side Correctional Queens are set to honour their outstanding players at the club’s annual awards ceremony to be held at Harare Central Prison today.
The club will seek to motivate the players ahead of the festive season with the biggest winner of the season set to walk away with the Player of the Season accolade.
They will also recognise the club’s Top Goal Scorer, the Most Loyal Player, the Most Promising Player, Most Disciplined Player and the Chairperson’s award to be presented by the club chair-person, Mavis Gumbo.
The awards event is sponsored by CBZ Holdings.
The club’s secretary general Arthur Gorejena said the selection of the winners was done by a panel comprising players and members of the technical team, with the Footballers Union of Zimbabwe overseeing the process.
Correctional Queens are home to national team players such as Marjoury Nyaumwe, Erina Jeke, Samukeliso Zulu and goalkeeper Chido Dzingirai.
The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services outfit had a decent outing this year and will be out to secure third position when they travel to Guruve for their last league match against Conduit Academy today.
Correctional Queens at some point dictated the pace in the Women’s Super League but were eventually pipped to the title by new local football powerhouses Herentals.
The Students sealed a back-to-back title success following their thumping 4-1 win over Chipembere Queens in the penultimate round of the campaign.
However, Gorejena believes the prisons side gave a good fight and the players deserve recognition.
“From the side of the executive, we are happy with the team’s performance this season. Of course there is always room for improvement.
“At some point this season we were the log leaders. Unfortunately, we can no longer speak of winning the title because of circumstances.
“I hope next season we will be able to cross the line. It’s been long since we last won the championship,” said Gorejena.
