THE National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) has described corruption as an ill that needs to be eradicated as it is an attack on human dignity.

In a speech read on her behalf by National Prosecuting Authority acting deputy prosecutor general, Mrs Rosa Takuva, during the African Union Anti-Corruption Day commemorations in Gwanda recently, Prosecutor General Justice Loyce Matanda-Moyo said corruption erodes trust in State institutions.

She said that when public funds intended for essential services are illicitly diverted, the consequences are on the general public are devastating.

This year’s commemoration was held under the theme: “Promoting Human Dignity in the Fight against Corruption.”
“We need to understand that corruption is a direct attack on our dignity as a people. Corruption all is not merely an economic crime; it is a profound assault on human dignity. This assault manifests through the erosion of public trust, the perpetuation of inequality, and the denial of fundamental rights and opportunities essential for a life of dignity and fulfillment.
“It represents a direct infringement on the inherent worth of every individual. The pervasive impact of corruption profoundly undermines a wide range of human rights, most notably economic, social, and cultural rights,” she said.

Justice Matanda-Moyo said there is a need for the country’s anti-corruption efforts to fully integrate a human rights-based approach. She said this will help to successfully combat corruption and uphold human dignity.

NPAZ’s efforts are geared towards strengthening the rule of law, which is the bedrock upon which human dignity thrives.
“As public prosecutors, we are on the frontline of this battle. Our role extends beyond merely securing convictions; it is fundamentally about restoring public faith in our institutions, deterring future criminal conduct, and ultimately, safeguarding the human dignity of every person in Zimbabwe. The NPAZ is unwavering in its resolve.
“We are continuously enhancing our capacity, embracing technological advancements, and fostering greater collaboration with law enforcement agencies and other justice delivery actors. We are committed to ensuring that no one is above the law, and that those who seek to enrich themselves at the expense of the public good are held accountable,” she said.
