Harare City Council chief security officer Dr Collen Tongoona (54) has been cleared of unlawfully using a council firearm for personal security without approval.
Harare City Council on June 30 last year sent Dr Tongoona on leave pending investigations into allegations of taking home a municipal police pistol number 1291668 without permission and that the firearm was used by his son to threaten some people after a misunderstanding.
According to a memo written by council’s chief traffic officer in 2021, Mr Martin Chimombe to council’s head of public safety Mr Miguel Moyo, the matter involving Tongoona’s son was reported at Warren Park Police Station.
The council was brought in when the gun was discovered to belong to the council.
Harare City Council acting chamber secretary Mr Warren Chiwawa then sent Dr Tongoona on paid leave saying the firearm was intended for cash-in-transit duties and for protection of council premises not for personal security of officials.
Dr Tongoona is now back at work after the matter was sorted out.
