Council to convert Amaveni terminus

Midlands Bureau
Kwekwe City Council is planning to convert Amaveni Long Distance Bus Terminus into a Vocational Training Centre. The once popular terminus has been lying idle for the last 10 years after the council built a new bus terminus in the CBD.

The city officials feel something should be done to put the resources at the once popular bus terminus to full use. Kwekwe mayor Alderman Matenda Madzoke said they had been toying with the idea and had since resolved to turn the terminus into a vocational training centre.

“There are many options that we are still weighing, one of them is to convert the rank into a VTC where people will be trained in carpentry, welding, among other things,” he said.

Alderman Madzoke said they were also considering renovating the bus terminus into one for cross-border buses.

“We have also discovered that our cross boarder buses are picking and dropping people everywhere in the CBD,” he said.

“So, another option would be renovating and turning it into a cross boarder bus terminus. But again, the major challenge is that of distance. Our passengers feel it is far from the CBD so the only option is to turn it into a VTC.”

Alderman Madzoke said the facility had a potential of generating income for the cash strapped municipality if resuscitated.

He said the matter would be finalised in the next full council meeting.
