Harare City Council is set to open two more kombi holding bays early next year to further decongest the Central Business District. The holding bays, which the city valued at US$1 million, will service commuter omnibuses plying the southern suburban routes and those coming in on eastern routes.
The city said in a statement yesterday that the additional bays would be constructed along Seke Road and Mutare Road.
“A new holding bay will be constructed at the open space at the corner of Cripps Road and Seke Road (near Coca Cola),” the city said.
“Another holding bay will be built along Mutare Road in Eastlea, opposite the Vehicle Inspection Depot. This one will cater for outside of Harare kombis such as those from Marondera, Goromonzi, Bhora and Murehwa.”
The development would allow the expansion of Coventry Road Bay and part of Fourth Street Bus Rank being transformed into a holding bay.
“The Coventry Holding Bay will be expanded to cater for commuter omnibuses that use the Market Square Bus Rank,” the council said.
“Part of the existing Fourth Street Bus Rank will be divided into a holding bay while the remainder will be used for pick and drop.”
The city said the move to build more holding bays rested on the success of the Coventry Holding Bay which resulted in decongestion at the Copacabana terminus and surrounding areas.
“The decision to add more holding bays is informed by the huge success that was recorded with the commissioning of the Coventry Holding Bay mid this year,” read the statement.
“Chinhoyi Street that feeds into Copacabana is now very trafficable, giving convenience to pedestrians and motorists alike.”
