A couple from Kezi in Matabeleland South province was robbed of about 1,2kgs of gold worth US$78 000 at gun point by a six-man gang that raided their home last Friday.

Police said the robbers, armed with an AK47 rifle, a pistol and an Okapi knife, also got away with R29 000 and US$1 000 in cash from the couple.

“The ZRP is investigating a case of armed robbery which occurred on 14/01/22 at Maphisa, Kezi, Matabeleland South, in which six unknown male adults armed with an AK47 rifle, a 9mm Star pistol and an Okapi knife pounced on a house and robbed a married couple of their R29 000 and US$1 000 cash, 1,150kgs of gold bullion valued at US$78 280, a 9mm pistol and a Toyota Wish motor vehicle,” said police.

“The suspects went on to kidnap the victims’ employee, a man aged 25, whom they later dumped in the stolen motor vehicle in Bulawayo. Anyone with information to contact any nearest police station.”

Police began impounding all vehicles with no licence plates or Temporary Identification Cards (TICs) in a bid to fight crimes committed using such cars.

According to the police, there have been a lot of crimes ranging from armed robbery, kidnapping, murder and rape, involving vehicles without licence plates.

Last year, a gang of six armed robbers driving a Honda Fit without licence plates raided a Bureau de Change in Bulawayo before hijacking another car and made off with an undisclosed amount of money in foreign currency.
