occurred after the 23-year-old victim had been called to give evidence.
However, as she took to the witness stand and saw the accused, she suddenly went insane.
The court had to be adjourned after the presiding magistrate, Mr Never Katiyo, ordered the victim to be medically examined.
Upon being questioned about her daughter’s behaviour, the mother told the court that she sometimes behaved in a weird manner that she failed to understand.
She also indicated that she assumed that accused who was aware of the victim’s mental illness took advantage of the condition to commit the offence.
The accused (24) was remanded out of custody to September 30 this year.
Prosecutor Mr Editor Mavuto, alleges that on February 25 this year, the woman was sleeping in her bedroom when the accused entered the room.
It is the court’s case that the accused then forcibly removed the woman’s clothes.
He then went on to rape her.
It is further alleged the woman later reported the matter to her mother who in turn made a police report.
