Court clerk up for fraud

A Mvuma Circuit Court accountant allegedly defrauded the Judiciary Service Commission (JSC) of $547 after forging a magistrate’s signature to withdraw the money from the commission’s bank account.

Sungano Kubiku, 36, of Newlands Suburb in Mvuma appeared before Gweru Magistrate Tayengwa Chibanda facing two counts of forgery.

Chibanda remanded him in custody.

His lawyer Herbert Ndlovu applied for bail.

Chibanda is expected to consider the application today.

Prosecuting, Daniel Tafuma told the court that on December 9 this year at around 10AM, Kubiku went to CBZ Bank Gweru Branch with withdrawal slips, which had forged signatures of Gweru magistrates Mildred Matuvi and Maud Munengwa.

The court heard that Kubiku presented one of the forged withdrawal slips and managed to withdraw $547 which he converted to his own use.

“On December 12, Kubiku went again to CBZ Bank where he presented the other forged withdrawal slip intending to withdraw $1,800,” said Tafuma.

“The transaction was declined by the bank as it had been alerted by one of the complainants, to block withdrawals.”

Tafuma said the withdrawal slip was taken to the bank manager, who discovered it contained forged signatures.
