FORMER Foreign Affairs Minister Walter Mzembi is expected back in court today for a default inquiry proceeding following his arrest by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) at the weekend.

Mzembi made his initial appearance on Saturday before Harare regional magistrate Mr Donald Ndirowei, facing charges of defaulting three warrants of arrest.

Prosecutor Ms Tendai Shonhayi told the court to defer the case to today as they were served with medical documents which laid the basis for Mzembi defaulting.

She said Mzembi also intended to serve the court with more outstanding documents.

Mzembi’s lawyer Mr Killian Mandiki indicated that he intended to apply for cancellation of the warrants based on medical grounds.

Mzembi is expected to fully explain why he defaulted in court after the court temporarily released his travelling documents to allow him to seek medical attention in South Africa.

The ex-Cabinet minister had promised to return the passport to the clerk of court on or before November 19, 2018.

After he failed to appear at the Harare Magistrates Court on theft of trust property charges, he again failed to show up on January 18, 2019 to answer to criminal abuse of office charges.

Mzembi is accused of converting televisions worth US$2 million, initially bought for fan parks during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, to his personal use.

The accusation stems from the time he was tourism minister.
