Harare Mayor Bernard Manyenyeni has been summoned to court to testify in a case in which an MDC-T councillor is facing indecent assault charges after he allegedly fondled a male room mate during a recent workshop in Kariba. The trial of Budiriro councillor Oddrey Sydney Chirombe (49) resumes tomorrow at the Chinhoyi Magistrates’ Courts.
Police yesterday delivered a subpoena to Mr Manyenyeni, who is a State witness.
Chirombe is out of custody on US$50 bail.
Prosecutor Ms Barbara Mabika alleged that on February 21, Chirombe woke up at night while a Nyaradzo Funeral Services bus driver Mr
Richard Nyakabau, whom he had offered a room, was asleep and started fondling him.
The court heard that the incident happened aboard a houseboat at Andora Harbour where Chirombe and other councillors were staying.
Nyakabau did not get a room and at around 10:30pm he was allegedly approached by Chirombe while sitting outside the bus.
Chirombe offered to share his room with him since it had two beds and the driver accepted, with the two sleeping without incident on the first day.
On the second day, Nyakabau retired early to bed, while Chirombe went out to drink, it is alleged.
He returned around 11pm and tried to start a conversation with Nyakabau, but was rebuffed as the bus driver wanted to rest, the court heard.
It is alleged Chirombe returned to his bed but at around 2am he sneaked into Nyakabau’s blankets and fondled him.
He allegedly removed his shorts and underwear.
This awoke Nyakabau who screamed for help, prompting the other councillors to investigate, the court was told.
