IOC president-elect Kirsty Coventry, who beat off stiff competition for the top job in March, is set to attend the 45th general assembly of the Olympic Council of Asia in the Middle Eastern nation next month, the organisation stated.
OCA director-general Husain Al Musallam announced during an online meeting of the OCA executive board that Coventry will accompany current IOC president Thomas Bach at the assembly, scheduled for May 11-12.
“This is a great honour and a great moment for the OCA, that the first visit of the newly elected IOC president after her election will be to Asia,” said Husain.
“Kirsty Coventry will be staying in Kuwait for a full three days and in that time plans to meet with all the National Olympic Committee presidents, talk with athletes and show her full support for Asia.”
Coventry, a five-time Olympian for Zimbabwe with two golds among her seven total medals, was elected in Greece on March 20.
She will become the IOC’s first female president, and the movement’s 10th overall, when she formally takes office on June 23. Husain outlined the programme for the 45th OCA session.
Events will begin on May 11 with an opening ceremony featuring a “One Asia” cultural performance, followed by a welcome dinner. Official business will be conducted the following day. – insidethegames.com.
