MINISTER of Sport, Arts and Recreation Kirsty Coventry has described the meeting she had with Zimbabwe Cricket chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani as being fruitful.
Coventry and Mukuhlani met in Harare last Thursday. The minister posted on her Twitter handle that it was a productive meeting with Mukuhlani assuring her that the International Cricket Council was pleased with the progress made in relation to conditions for the lifting of Zimbabwe’s suspension. Zimbabwe had their membership which include funding temporarily taken away in July after the Sports and Recreation Commission suspended the Mukuhlani led board the month before. The SRC has since lifted the suspension of the ZC board and undertaken in writing not to interfere with the operations of the cricket mother body without ICC consent. This should pave way for the lifting of Zimbabwe’s suspension when the ICC board meets early next month in Australia.
“Good meeting with Zimbabwe Cricket Chair this morning. Still some work to do but on track. Assured me @ICC will be happy and focus will continue to be on players so Zimbabwe can become amongst the world’s best again,’’ Coventry posted.
Coventry, Mukuhlani and SRC chairman Gerald Mlotshwa are soon heading off for a meeting with the world cricket body where they will give further guarantees which should pave the way for Zimbabwe to regain their ICC membership privileges.
Mukuhlani also took the opportunity during the meeting to enlighten Coventry on how the ZC debt got to be housed under Zimbabwe Asset Management Corporation last year. Under the Zamco arrangement, the interest rate for the ZC loans is fixed at 6, 5 percent with the cricket mother body to repay the principal amount at the end of 2023 in the form of one bullet payment. ZC loans that went under Zamco were for NMB Bank, CBZ, Metbank and Ecobank. — @Mdawini_29
