Covid-19 deaths rise

THE Covid-19 death toll has increased to eight as the country recorded 73 new cases on Saturday with half of the cases being reported in Matabeleland South province.

To date Zimbabwe has recorded a total of 698 cases since the outbreak of the pandemic on March 20 this year.

The eighth death is of a 21-year-old woman from Harare who tested positive on Saturday and later died on the same day.

She had no travel history but had an underlying illness.

Matabeleland South recorded 36 cases on Saturday, bringing the total number of cases in the province to 90.

Bulawayo that has 72 cases and Matabeleland North that has 17 cases recorded no positive cases on that day.

According to the Ministry of Health and Child Care, of the 73 new cases, only eight were recorded from locals and the rest from returnees.

“As at July 4, 2020, Zimbabwe had 698 confirmed cases, including 181 recoveries and eight deaths. These new cases include returnees from South Africa (55), Botswana (3), Mozambique (3) United States of America (2), Australia (1), Zambia and eight local cases who are isolated. Two of the local cases are contacts of known positive cases,” read the statement.
