WARD SIX residents in Bulawayo conducted a clean-up campaign on Wednesday in a bid to promote cleanliness in the area.
The Councillor of the area, Clr Nkosilathi Hove-Mpofu, said their goal was to ensure that they contribute to keeping the city clean.
“We conducted a clean-up campaign on Wednesday and our motivation has been in ensuring that we use the available resources to keep our area clean. This has been prompted by the fact that the refuse collectors do not visit our area so we have decided to take the matter into our own hands,” he said.
Councillor Hove-Mpofu indicated that there was a huge turnout of residents for the clean up campaign.
“I am delighted that we had over 600 community members joining the campaign and we managed to cover the three different segments in the area. Our plan is to conduct these campaigns twice a week, on Wednesday and Friday. This is to ensure that we contribute to keeping the city clean and to adhere to the National Clean Up Day which is on the first Friday of every month,” he said.
He indicated that they have been engaging a number of stakeholders in ensuring that they build different vending stalls in the area.
“Our hope is that the Bulawayo City Council (BCC) will help us by building vending stalls and toilets in these areas to promote hygienic practices and reduce the occurrences of cases of cholera which are largely caused by poor sanitation,” he said.
