THE Consumer Protection Commission (CPC) has warned consumers to be on the lookout for recycled diapers and sanitary pads allegedly circulating on the market, raising concerns over potential health risks associated with their use.
In a public notice, the Commission said it had received reports of the products being sold to unsuspecting consumers and urged the public to exercise caution when purchasing hygiene products.
“The Consumer Protection Commission has received disturbing information about recycled diapers and sanitary pads being sold in the market to unsuspecting consumers,” the Commission said.
It warned that using the products could pose serious health risks to consumers.
“The Commission, therefore, would want to urge all consumers to be vigilant when purchasing such products as their use poses a serious health risk to the end users.”
The regulator advised consumers to buy diapers and sanitary pads from reputable shops and trusted suppliers and to check product packaging before making purchases.
“Check for clear manufacturer details, intact seals, correct branding and consistent product information. Unusually low prices, spelling errors and poor packaging may be warning signs, although packaging alone does not establish authenticity,” said the Commission.
Parents and caregivers were urged to be particularly cautious when buying the products.
“Parents and caregivers should avoid purchasing diapers and sanitary pads of doubtful origin or quality. If a product appears suspicious, discontinue its use and retain the packaging, receipt and details of the seller to assist with reporting.”
The Commission also reminded retailers and suppliers of their responsibility to ensure that products offered for sale are safe and meet acceptable quality standards.
Consumers who suspect they have purchased recycled diapers or sanitary pads have been urged to report their concerns to the Commission through its toll-free lines: Econet 08080323 and NetOne 08012301.
