CPU in Byo storm damage assessment

THE Civil Protection Unit (CPU) has deployed a team to Bulawayo to assess the extent of damage caused by heavy winds that were accompanied by light rains at the weekend.

Schools, houses and shops were destroyed in a number of suburbs in the city.

Bulawayo Metropolitan Province provincial administrator, Mrs Khonzani Ncube, who leads the CPU in the province, yesterday said a team had been sent to assess the extent of the damage.

“The teams are out to assess the damage. I can’t say much at the moment because it happened over the weekend but as the CPU we had our meeting this morning,” said Mrs Ncube.

“We’re going to compile a report which we’re going to send to the national CPU office in Harare. We’re going to look at the cause of the damage and compile a cost of repair quotation as well.”

Mrs Ncube said the CPU’s response would depend on the time that would be spent compiling the report.

She said they would remain guided by the Meteorological Service Department on how members of the public should conduct themselves ahead of the 2016/2017 rainy season.

Bulawayo provincial education director Mr Dan Moyo said damages in schools were a major setback as pupils were preparing for examinations.

He appealed to well-wishers to assist in repairing infrastructure at affected schools.

“I’m in the process of compiling my  report. We’ve made donors aware but we still appeal for assistance before further damages occur,” Mr Moyo said.
