A RAPE suspect went berserk at a police station and trashed the charge office before smashing windows of four cars. Officers at Insuza Police Station were taking a statement from Jethro Ncube, 47, who had allegedly raped two minors, when he went wacko.
He allegedly broke a bench that he had been handcuffed to and used part of it to break furniture in the charge office.
Witnesses said cops and other suspects fled from the office with Ncube in hot pursuit.
The incident happened at around 12AM on Saturday.
Matabeleland North Acting police spokesperson Sergeant Namatirai Mashona said she could not comment on the incident as it had occurred during her absence from the province.
A witness, John Mpofu, said: “Female police officers were taking statements from the man when he rose with the bench which he was handcuffed to.
“He snapped the bench in two, gripped a piece between his handcuffed hands and broke counters in the charge office.”
He said a police officer who came to check on the commotion was caught in the crossfire.
“Still wielding the bench, the man chased after her and she tripped and fell to the ground. The angry man seemed to think she had hidden in one of the cars at the camp so he started smashing the windscreens on the vehicles,” said Mpofu.
A police source told The Chronicle that police officers regrouped and subdued Ncube, who he said was acting like he was possessed.
“It took at least a dozen police officers, some who came running from the camp, to contain and re-arrest Ncube. He was injured in the commotion and has been admitted to St Luke’s Hospital in Lupane,” said the officer.
