BILLY Jassat, at 70, has dedicated himself to continuing the implementation of Drug-Free Zim programmes to enhance the fight against drug use and promote a culture of sobriety nationwide. With unwavering commitment, he drives the organisation’s efforts to create a drug-free society, improving the lives of individuals, families, and communities across Zimbabwe.

Jassat’s personal journey has been a driving force behind his anti-drug crusade. Having struggled with alcohol addiction himself, he understands the challenges of recovery and the importance of support. Through his work with Drug-Free Zim, he aims to provide young people with the resources and guidance he wished he had during his own struggles. By sharing his story and offering a listening ear, Jassat has helped countless youth find the courage to seek help and overcome their addiction. His dedication to the cause has earned him recognition and respect from the community, and his organisation has become a beacon of hope for those affected by drug abuse.

Drug Free Zim has established a network of rehabilitation centres and support groups, providing a safe and supportive environment for those struggling with addiction. The funds for these initiatives have been made possible through the generosity of families, friends, and sponsors who share Jassat’s vision of a drug-free society. With their support, Jassat has been able to provide vital resources and services to those in need, helping them to overcome their addiction and rebuild their lives.

Despite the progress made, Jassat remains steadfast in his commitment to the cause. He continues to engage with youth, speak at community events, and advocate for policies that support drug rehabilitation and awareness. Through his tireless efforts, he hopes to create a safer, healthier future for generations to come.

Drug and substance abuse is a serious problem that affects many people in Zimbabwe, especially the youths. It can ruin their health, their relationships, their education, and their future. That is why Drug-Free Zim is on a mission to educate and empower the citizens of Zimbabwe about the dangers of addiction and how to help those who are struggling with it. By providing access to counselling, peer support groups, and referral services, Drug-Free Zim seeks to empower individuals and families affected by addiction to seek help and receive the support they need to overcome their struggles. Furthermore, the organisation works closely with schools, community leaders, and healthcare providers to create a network of support and resources that can help individuals achieve and maintain a drug-free lifestyle.

Ultimately, Drug-Free Zim’s mission is to create a safer, healthier, and more supportive society for all Zimbabweans, where individuals can thrive and reach their full potential without the burden of drug addiction. By working together, the organisation believes that a drug-free Zimbabwe is possible, and that its citizens can live fulfilling lives free from the grip of addiction.

Drug-Free Zim has been hosting drug awareness programmes across the country since the beginning of last year. They have held eight programmes so far, in Harare, Bulawayo, Kwekwe, and Gweru. Jassat, who is also a board member of Pumumvuri Mental Health and an associate member of the Islamic Medical Association of Zimbabwe, said that they are adopting a multifaceted approach and aim to make a significant impact in the fight against drug abuse and promote a healthier, safer society for all.

“Having experienced the challenges of addiction first-hand, understanding loss in all its forms because these are the tragic consequences of addiction and recognising the importance of overcoming it, I am grateful for the opportunity to make a positive impact in this field. It’s my belief that my journey and the guidance of a higher power have led me to the meaningful work of Drug-Free Zim,” he said.

He noted that in Zimbabwe, substances such as alcohol, marijuana, crystal meth, crack cocaine, cough mixtures, and inhalants are alarmingly prevalent.

“We’ve observed a concerning trend where the affordability of drugs influences the preferences of the youth. Unfortunately, the cheaper the drug, the more widespread its use becomes,” he said.

Jassat also stressed that the rise in substance abuse within Zimbabwe underscores the impact of external cultures, particularly those disseminated online, on societal fabric and the erosion of cultural heritage.

“Addressing this substance abuse ‘pandemic’ raises a critical question: How can we effectively combat it? We believe that the solutions lie in empowering our youth, the leaders of tomorrow, who are dedicated to safeguarding their generation’s well-being,” he said.

He further outlined that the establishment of the Drug-Free Zim Youth Warriors initiative is aimed at providing essential support, resources, and education to empower young individuals in making a difference and saving lives.

“To this end, while acknowledging the challenges law enforcement faces in curbing substance abuse due to resource limitations, we are convinced that engaging civil society in the fight against drugs will have a positive and lasting impact in our communities,” said Jassat.—@Lo7246Lovelyn
