THIS week, we feature a garden by Tropical Reinsurance in Harare.
Their garden brings us to our topic of the week — how to create order in such spaces.
For a start, every element must be in its rightful place, from the entrance to the back.
Order must be created in the sense of positioning features in the landscape and again in the functionality of the space.
In this regard, make sure all the dirt is gone by keeping the yard clean at all times.
With the focus on cleanliness by President Mnangagwa, we need not say more.
Now that the rains are upon us, make haste to keep the lawn mowed down, and this must be done at least once a week.
Remove any clutter in the yard, particularly anything that will store water to avoid breeding of insects.
Recycle anything that is not working.
Learn to identify any invasive species like lantana or jacaranda in the landscape.
We owe it to future generations to preserve indigenous flora.
Order then comes in by carefully selecting the right plant species that will blend with the space available to create synergy with the landscape.
Create order by planting plants in succession of their flowering season.
As soon as one completes flowering, another takes over; that way, you will have a continuous display of colour.
Every garden layout must be put on paper before it is implemented.
This allows for one to see things in the right perspective before implementing.
Position features such as pools, gazebos, a storeroom and a child play area accordingly.
What better way to end the year than to plan your space for the new year!
