THE vibrant, often overloaded buses that criss-cross Zimbabwe’s roads are more than just vehicles; they are moving symbols of hope, determination and togetherness.
Laden with passengers, parcels and the hum of everyday life, these colourful giants carry stories of resilience, tenacity and generosity.
To honour this unique cultural icon, acclaimed writer Isabella Matambanadzo and renowned editor and publisher Irene Staunton, in partnership with the community-driven Friendship Bench Hub are launching an artistic celebration titled: Celebrating the Spirit of Zimbabwean Buses.
They said they are inviting local painters, photographers and writers to bring these buses and the life that surrounds them to vivid life.
The project will culminate in a mid-2026 exhibition featuring drawings, photographs and paintings, accompanied by a curated collection of short stories and interviews that offer a rich narrative to complement the visuals.
“Submissions are welcomed in three categories, photography, painting and writing. In the photography category, people will be expected to capture the essence, drama, humanity and sheer presence of Zimbabwe’s buses and the lives entwined with them.
“Painting and drawing, one must interpret the buses, their journeys, passengers and symbolic weight through one’s artistic lens. For writing, short stories of 3 000 words or less, whether fiction or narrative non-fiction, exploring the journeys, challenges and triumphs aboard or around these buses are required,” Matambanadzo said.
Eight of the best stories will be selected for inclusion in the accompanying publication. Outstanding contributions in each category will be recognised with prizes for Best Photograph, Best Painting and Best Short Story.
“The first step is simple: interested participants must signal their intention to enter by 16 March, 2026.
This allows organisers to gauge interest and plan the project effectively. Details on final submission formats and deadlines will follow once participation is confirmed.
“This is a rare chance to shine a light on a beloved symbol of Zimbabwean life, through stories, images and brushstrokes.
Whether behind the lens, pen or canvas, creative minds are invited to honour the buses that move our communities and carry our shared experiences.”
