The late Gogo Ellen Mutuma-Samuriwo, who ran Cresta Mbare, was on Friday laid to rest at her Chihota rural home.

Gogo Samuriwo, who was well known for her food outlet which she opened 40-years-ago, succumbed to diabetes.

She opened a kitchen trading under the name Cresta in Mbare at the area commonly known as ‘Kumasquatter’ and later on turned her home in Mbare for the same purpose until she became a proprietor around the Stodart Hall area.

Speaking to The Herald, her son Munyaradzi confirmed the burial and described the death of his mother as a major blow to the family and the community at large.

“We are here at Chombo Village in Chihota under Chief Nenguwo where we are paying our last respects to our dear mother. Her death spelt doom to both the community and the entire family,” said Munyaradzi.

Gogo Samuriwo is survived by four children, Vivian, Hazel, Kilian and Munyaradzi.

She was very active in the ruling Zanu PF party and played a significant role in the mobilisation of cadres to support the party from grassroots level.

A neighbour to Gogo Samuriwo, Mrs Veronica Kahari described her as a loving mother who was deeply involved in community humanitarian work.

“I have known Gogo Samuriwo since 1979 after being introduced to her by her daughter, Vivian, who was my friend. She was a good person with motherly qualities.

“She used to bring leftovers from her kitchen and distribute them to neighbours. At the time of her death, she was now concentrating on the vulnerable groups, the elderly and orphans,” said Mrs Kahari.

“Sometimes she could give people food hampers, she was a very sociable and peace loving mother. In times of need she could donate even the last cent she had. She nursed more than 13 children who were in need,” she said.

One of her employees, Mrs Tracy Mukonomuvi said she was deeply saddened by the loss of Gogo Samuriwo adding she was a patriotic cadre who could preach the goodness of the ruling Zanu PF party.

“We are all in deep sorrow following the passing on of Gogo, she was a good person who would always encourage us to follow the principles of the revolutionary party Zanu PF. She was loving and could exhibit her love to everyone,” said Mrs Mukonomuvi.
