THE Old Mutual Academy of Cricket Excellence Trust, formerly the Heath Streak Cricket Academy, are set to host their flagship annual cricket extravaganza – the Old Mutual Colts Cricket League – as part of their 10 anniversary celebrations to be held in Bulawayo today.
The institution, established by the late former Zimbabwe cricket captain and coach Heath Streak along with long-time friend Joseph Rego in 2013, has been instrumental in opening doors to budding cricketers in the communities.
Unfortunately, Streak, who died earlier this month after losing a long battle with cancer, will not be around to witness the milestone.
However, president and board chairman of the Trust, Rego said Old Mutual Academy of Cricket Excellence will look back with pride to a decade of serving the nation in the field of sport with humility and passion.
The Trust has made giant strides in the growth and development of cricket in Zimbabwe and in the region in-spite of the economic challenges the nation has been facing.
“There is no doubt that Zimbabweans are already witnessing the fruits of our labour seeing children from less privileged environments stand up to the challenge and compete at par with those coming from more affluent background,” said Rego in a statement yesterday.
The Academy is a highly reputable non-profit making multi-sport institution in Zimbabwe comprising of a board of distinguished trustees like philanthropist Raj Modi, the new Mayor of Bulawayo David Coltart, Elifasi Mashaba, former Zimbabwean national cricketers John Rennie and Denis Streak and Rego, a celebrated and respected International sport consultant from India who took over as the president and Board Chairman from Streak in April 2021.
“Our personal contributions to the Academy have been invaluable in spearheading the growth and development of sport in Zimbabwe and helping the Academy achieve the highest possible standards. “The Academy is greatly honoured by the presence of His Excellency the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe Cde. Emmerson D. Mnangagwa on their Board as Honourable Patron.
“We attribute our success to Old Mutual and CABS who have been the financial backbone of our prestigious institution since our inception in 2013,” said Rego. The academy will also hold the inaugural edition of the CABS Under-13 Cricket Cup, destined to turn into an annual feature.
Old Mutual Group Marketing, Public Affairs and Sustainability Head Lillian Mbayiwa and the Managing Director of CABS Mehluli Mpofu are expected to grace the celebrations.
