JOSEPH Rego, the founding director and board chairman of the Old Mutual Cricket Academy, believes Zimbabwe cricket is on a positive trajectory because of the development programmes in place.
The administrator, who has been in the country since 2013, is impressed with the popularity the sport has gained over the years.
On the development end, he says structured training has also been on the upward trend.
“I firmly believe that with cricket’s growing popularity in Zimbabwe, the demand for structured training for young aspirants has been increasing.
Cricket is not just about teaching the basics of the game but about instilling discipline, fostering team spirit and building characters,” said Rego yesterday.
He was winding down preparations for the Old Mutual Colts and CABS Under-13 Cups that will take part in Bulawayo.
“Grassroots sport is important to any developing sporting nation.
“It is a foundation for sport for life and for high performance sport but, more importantly, when delivered well it creates immense value and develops more talents for the country in the years to come,” said Rego.
