IN line with Zimbabwe Cricket’s (ZC) mission to spread the game of cricket countrywide, Binga district is set to host an elementary coaching course early next year.

The beginners’ training programme will be held over four days, starting on February 23.

Developmental coaching expert and ZC coach education officer Stanley Timoni is set to facilitate the training of teachers and former students with keen interests in sport.

Timoni said they were impressed with the enthusiasm shown by the Binga community to have the sport played in the district.
“As ZC we’ve got a programme where we conduct coaching courses countrywide as we want to spread the game of cricket.

This is the vision of Zimbabwe Cricket to spread, sustain and improve the game of cricket countrywide. In February, we’re going to Binga for a coaching clinic and I must say we’re impressed with the enthusiasm that is being shown by the community.

“Our targeted participants for this elementary coaching course are teachers, both primary and secondary as well as school leavers who are interested in the game of cricket.

By attending this course, the participants will be able to introduce cricket at grassroots level as they will be taught the skills and knowledge on how to coach and play cricket,” Timoni said.

The ZC coach education officer who held three beginners’ coaching courses in Matabeleland North and South Provinces in 2022, said following availability of funds, they hope to conduct more clinics in rural areas next year, starting with Binga. This year, Timoni conducted elementary courses in Gwanda, Hwange and Victoria Falls.

“Since our target is mostly teachers, schools are going to benefit from coaches’ new skills. By training coaches who will in turn train the pupils, we are giving youngsters an opportunity to set the foundation to earn a living through cricket.

The sport industry is growing and every child deserves a chance to position themselves towards earning a living through sport.

I’m surviving through sport and such training programmes are an opportunity for one to capacitate themselves and contribute towards development of cricket in the country,” said Timoni. — @ZililoR
