Cricket is one of the oldest games in the world, and its roots trace back to 16th-century England. But in recent decades, the sport has gained truly global popularity, including among women. At a high level, women’s cricket is played in dozens of countries, with international tournaments attracting audiences of many millions. One of the key events in 2024 will be the Women’s T20 Cricket World Cup, for which qualifying matches are already in full swing and the undoubted favourites.
For one of the national teams, Zimbabwe, getting to the World Cup has become a real national goal. Ahead of the qualifiers in the UAE, the women’s team has decided to be strengthened by a world-renowned mentor – the legendary West Indies player.
Courtney Walsh is the guru of women’s cricket.
Guinea-born Courtney Walsh has made a name for himself as one of the greatest players in the history of cricket. He played for the West Indies team from 1984 to 2001, taking part in a record 132 Test matches. Walsh took 519 wickets in Test cricket, which remains the third-highest total in history. A winner of numerous individual honours, he captained the West Indies national team from 1994 to 1998.
After his playing career ended, Walsh devoted himself fully to coaching. He has captained the men’s and women’s national teams of the West Indies, Bangladesh and Pakistan. Under his leadership, the West Indies women’s team reached the semifinals of the World Cup in 2022, the best result in their history.
It was Walsh’s vast experience with women’s teams that sparked interest from Zimbabwe. The African country’s cricket union invited the 61-year-old as a consultant to the head coach of the women’s team.
A tough road to the T20 World Cup
The Zimbabwean cricketers have a major goal of making it to the Women’s T20 World Cup for the first time in history. A ticket to the prestigious event can be won at a qualifying tournament in the UAE, which will be held from April 25 to May 7. It will feature ten teams divided into two groups:
Group A: Sri Lanka, Thailand, Scotland, Uganda, USA.
Group B: Zimbabwe, UAE, Ireland, Netherlands, Vanuatu and Zimbabwe.
From each group, the top two teams will advance to the semifinals, the winners of which will receive the coveted tickets to the 2024 World Cup in Bangladesh.
According to the Zimbabwe Cricket Union leadership, Courtney Walsh’s invitation should seriously boost the country’s chances of success:
“We are happy and proud to bring in a consultant like Courtney for our campaign in Abu Dhabi. He is one of the greatest cricketers in the world, and we believe his immense experience at the highest level of women’s cricket will help us improve our chances of success.”
Zimbabwe girls triumph
The success of the Zimbabwean women’s team at the African Games was a real breakthrough for the sport in the country. The event pleasantly surprised everyone, from fans of the national team to those who or bet on Zimbabwe’s victory through the applications of other bookmakers.
National team captain Mary-Ann Mushenge made an emotional confession after winning the final:
“This triumph means a lot to us and to women’s cricket in Zimbabwe. We have proved that we are called the best team in Africa for a reason. Now we are aiming for new heights.”
In the final match against South Africa, the Zimbabweans needed an extra over (super over) to decide the winner. After a hard-fought last over, it was the home team who stood firm.
Undoubtedly, the triumph at the African Games inspired the Zimbabwean women’s team with the spirit of unity and belief in their strength. Bringing in the legendary Courtney Walsh to prepare for the qualifiers adds experience and skill.
