Police in Zimbabwe have confirmed the hijacking of a cross-border truck in Beitbridge after a group of masked robbers ambushed the vehicle and made off with both the truck and its cargo.
According to Zimbabwe Republic Police, the incident occurred while the truck was en route, with the driver, Prudence Ncube, and her assistant on board.
In a statement, police said the assailants, who were armed, fired a shot into the air to intimidate the occupants before ordering them out of the vehicle.
“The suspects, who were wearing masks, discharged a firearm into the air to scare the driver and his assistant before taking control of the truck and driving away with it,” police said.
Ncube recounted the terrifying ordeal, saying the situation unfolded rapidly and left them with no choice but to comply.
“They suddenly appeared and one of them fired a shot into the air. We feared for our lives and immediately surrendered. They ordered us out of the truck and took everything. There was nothing we could do,” she said.
Investigations have since revealed that the truck belongs to prominent businessman Zenzele Moyo.
Efforts to get a comment from Moyo were unsuccessful, as he could not be reached on his known contact numbers.
Police say investigations into the matter are ongoing, and have appealed to members of the public for any information that may lead to the recovery of the vehicle and arrest of the suspects.
