THE Central Region Soccer League(CRSL) title race is beginning to take shape, with leaders Blanket Mine, Kwekwe United and West Nicholson starting to open a gap over the chasing pack.
All three frontrunners recorded important results over the weekend to strengthen their promotion ambitions.
Blanket Mine had to dig deep to come from behind and secure a hard-fought 2-1 victory over a determined Shabanie Mine at Sabiwa Stadium.
The win saw them consolidate their position at the top of the table with 48 points from 20 matches.
Kwekwe United were among the standout performers of the weekend after defeating Gwanda Pirates 2-1 at Phelandaba Stadium.
The Tendai Chikuni-coached side remains firmly in contention for the title and trails the leaders by just three points.
West Nicholson occupy third position following a tense 1-0 victory over Super Strikers on Monday.
They, however, have an inferior goal difference to Kwekwe United, with both sides level on 45 points.
The dream of a return to the top flight is gradually fading for Air Force side Chapungu.
Waru Waru suffered a 1-0 defeat to ZRP Gwanda at Phelandaba Stadium on Saturday.
The Gweru-based outfit now trails the leaders by eight points, although it still has a game in hand.
Gwanda Pirates complete the top five and sit nine points adrift of the pacesetters.
Only three matches have been played in the second half of the season, but the race for the sole promotion ticket to the Premier Soccer League is increasingly appearing to be a battle between the leading trio.
However, the championship race is far from over, and with 15 matches still to be played, there remains plenty of football and potential twists ahead.
