Today, Cuba celebrates 70th anniversary of the day of national rebellion, which is considered the beginning of its revolution that was led by the late President Fidel Castro.

In a statement, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Cuba in Zimbabwe Mrs Yoisy Ford Garcia said the commemoration denounces the United States’ blockade genocide that has lasted for more than six decades.

“The Cuban Republic, on this July 26, 2023, commemorates the 70th anniversary of the Day of National Rebellion, and within the framework of the event denounces once again the US blockade genocide that has lasted more than six decades, and vehemently rejects the inclusion of Cuba in the spurious list of countries that sponsor terrorism,” she said.

“Cubans will always remember that on July 26, 1953, a group of young Cubans, led by Fidel Castro, placed themselves at the forefront of the fight for the true independence of Cuba. In the year of the centenary of the national hero José Martí, they led the assault on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Barracks, in Santiago de Cuba and Bayamo, respectively.

“The action would open a new stage of combat in the redemptive struggles of the Cuban people against the dictatorship and hegemony of the oligarchy and imperialism and highlighting armed action as the main means of struggle.

“This feat began the era that would give a transcendent turn to the history of our Americans with the sowing in fertile soil of the seed of the social revolution that would establish the first bastion of socialism in the Western Hemisphere.”

On July 26, 1953, Fidel Castro led a group of rebels to attack the Moncada Barracks, a military fortress of strongman Fulgencio Batista, and the Carlos Manuel de Cespedes garrison in the nearby city of Bayamo.

Both operations failed from the military point of view, but marked the starting point of the uprising against Batista, who was ultimately ousted in 1959. The Caribbean Island has provided assistance, health and love, for more than 60 years, to intricate corners of the world that include Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America.

Currently, Cuban doctors from different specialties are present in 56 countries with 23,792 health collaborators.

Cuba and Zimbabwe continue to consolidate their political and commercial relations.

Recently, 15 members of the Cuban Medical Brigade arrived in the country, including doctors and biomedical engineers, to collaborate with the Zimbabwean health system for three years, with the expectation of increasing the number.

Bilateral ties between the two countries are also consolidated in the education and biopharmaceutical sectors.
