WASHINGTON. — Cuba’s diplomatic mission in Washington said yesterday it will temporarily resume consular activities, which were suspended after it was unable to find a US bank to handle its account. Washington-based M&T bank informed the Cuban Interests Section on Friday that it would continue receiving deposits from consular services until February 17, the mission said in a statement. “Consular services will be immediately resumed on a temporary basis” until that date while it looks for another bank, the mission said. It suspended its consular services on November 26 saying M&T bank was closing its account and it had been unable to find a new one.
Cuba’s “Interests Section” in the US capital is in lieu of an embassy, a consequence of the Cold War rupture in relations between the two rivals.
The United States has had comprehensive economic sanctions clamped on Cuba since 1962.
The mission contends that the closing of its bank account stemmed from restrictions related to the embargo. — AFP.
