I hope you had a great week spreading love and building on the love God has blessed you with.
This week have some soul searching in order as we continue seeking to build stronger relationships.
My question is, can your partner trust you to always be in their corner?
Many want to be trusted but few want to actually be that person their partner can happily trust.
Trust is one of the pillars, or cornerstone of any healthy relationship, be it a marriage or a romantic partnership, even between friends.
It is the glue that holds two individuals together, allowing them to navigate life’s challenges with grace and confidence.
However, it often seems that despite its importance, trust is a diminishing factor in many relationships.
Why is it that very few people are willing to put in the effort to become trustworthy?
Is it too much to ask, I wonder? Is trust, a prerequisite for happiness?
You tell me!
Imagine a relationship without trust — built on uncertainty and doubts. I imagine such a union would be fragile, vulnerable to crumbling at the slightest trial.
Trust, on the other hand, creates that solid foundation that allows both partners to flourish and grow together.
It is not enough to merely desire to be trusted, to be fair, one must actively strive to earn it.
For the believer, the Bible offers a wealth of wisdom when it comes to fostering trust in relationships, I wouldn’t exhaust all references in this article, but Proverbs 20:6 states, “Many claim to have unfailing love, but a faithful person who can find?”
This reminds us that trustworthiness is a rare and precious quality. And the popular, Proverbs 31 emphasises the importance of trust within a marital bond, in verses 11-12: “Her husband can trust her, and she will greatly enrich his life.”
The scriptures reiterate that trust is both earned and cherished in committed relationships. It’s undeniable that trust can be challenging to establish, especially when past experiences have left us scarred. I totally get that.
However, it is essential to recognise that trust is not impossible to build or regain.
It requires commitment, self-reflection, and personal growth, ka “maturity” wo so.
By working on ourselves and our integrity, if we are to be honest, zvinobuda, maybe not overnight, but we do pave the way towards becoming that trustworthy person our partner can rely on.
We can also learn from others, those that have worked on trust and reaped the rewards.
Don’t forget the principle of reaping what you sow, it’s real. Building trust from within:
To cultivate trust, we must critically examine ourselves. Are there areas within us that need improvement? Are we reliable in keeping our promises? Do we consistently prioritise our partner’s needs?
This one crops up so often — how some partners selfishly disregard the needs of their significant other, causing discord.
Such individuals do this at their own peril really, as they are shooting themselves in the foot, destroying a beautiful thing God blessed them with.
How about we delve deep into our souls?
I reckon, therein, we can identify qualities that contribute positively to building trust, to being a better partner. As they say, where there’s a will, there’s a way.
Additionally, we can also explore other “relationship-ruining traits”, and check ourselves, where we stand, for instance how do you fare in areas such as jealousy, infidelity, and lack of communication?
Are you ruining your own relationship? Try to have that conversation with yourself, seeking to improve where you think you fall short.
Ridiculous trust issues
We can laugh at ourselves sometimes. We probably all have tales of absurd trust-related incidents, misjudgements, assumptions, suspicions, or self proclaimed “detective” efforts in relationships to catch our partner in a lie?
Perhaps someone refused to let their partner attend a weekend getaway with friends due to unfounded fears. Maybe a friend jumped to conclusions, believing their partner was cheating based on a harmless text message, naiyo social media yakadai kuuya!
Sharing these amusing anecdotes not only helps us recognise the irrationality of trust issues, but also allows us to reflect on our own behaviour. Do we deserve to be trusted, have we earned it?
Despite living in a world where trust is often tested, it is however, crucial to hold onto hope, for, how can we cope without hope? Being faithful and trustworthy should not be seen as outdated ideals but rather as enduring principles that can strengthen relationships.
It is within reach, and within your power to instil trust within your relationship. You can start with small steps today. Small gestures, consistency in actions, transparency and open communication can create a safe haven where trust can thrive.
By striving to become the person our partner can trust wholeheartedly, you and I can build lasting and fulfilling relationship if not in a relationship right now,you can still decide to be trustworthy when that special person comes into your life, for they are coming,if it is your desire. God will make it happen at the appointed time. Isaiah 60v22 says, “When the time is right, I the Lord will make it happen”.
In conclusion, trust is vital, but sadly, it is not always readily available. It requires work, self-reflection, and a commitment to growth. It is not only possible but is the foundation for a journey filled with love, understanding, and happiness. May this inspire someone to embrace the challenge of cultivating trust and becoming a pillar of trustworthiness.
Let’s keep the conversation going, share views, experiences and even ask questions for those in the ‘love family’, ie those that continue striving to do better in relationships, marriages or preparation for love and marriage.
