EUROPEAN Union (EU) Ambassador to Zimbabwe Jobst von Kirchmann yesterday launched a Culture Month arts exhibition at Chitungwiza Arts Centre.
Visual artists are showcasing their pieces under the theme “United in Diversity”.
Some of the artists could not match the theme.
However, organisers of the competition gave sculptors more room for the competitors to perfect their works.
The competition marks the beginning of Harare Province’s Culture Month celebrations.
The artists have been given another month to match their works with the theme.
The competition is being held by National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) in conjunction with the European Union.
William Ndinde, the NACZ Harare province director, said artists must use this opportunity to polish their work and relate it to the theme.
“Some of the work was not really in line with the theme, so we decided to hold on from holding the prize-giving ceremony but, instead, have the EU ambassador launch the competition,” he said.
Ambassador Kirchmann said the theme went well with the EU agenda and Zimbabwe’s constitution.
“Unity in Diversity is our theme because it is our motto of the EU, we are 27 different countries, we speak different languages, we dress differently, we eat differently but we always find our way together united in diversity.
“That, in Europe, has brought us peace for over 70 years.
“When I saw that the theme of the Culture Month was promoting diversity, peace and unity, I said to myself it speaks about us and even the Zimbabwe constitution also speaks about unity. When I was moving around I saw that this is a place that unites people with its diversity.
“I could see different cultures in small and big different colours. You could see that it is uniting black and white.”
